Holus is the result of a meeting one November evening in 1997
of three musicians for an informal session. This séance took place
at
Terje Gewelt's studio, "The Cookie Factory". It was natural
to let the
tape run, to see if any of the music was worthy of further development.
As none of the musicians had envisioned that the session would
result in a CD, many musical chances were taken. After listening back
to the recording, they discovered that they had documented a unique
musical meeting. Holus consists of fourteen improvised pieces, plus
a composition of Wayne Shorter, Nefertiti, all played in a loose, playful
and daring manner which is often lacking in studio recorded jazz
releases.
Resonant Music is proud to present this fresh and uncompromising
music featuring three of Norway's leading jazz musicians.
Oslo based pianist, Roy Powell (32) has a background as a classical
pianist and composer, being, at one time student of Sir Harrison
Birtwistle at the Royal Northern College of Music. As a Jazz musician
he has worked with The Creative Jazz Orchestra, Anthony Braxton,
Art Farmer, Vince Mendoza, Herb Geller and he has lead his own
groups since 1995. He has toured the UK and Scandinavia with his
own group (featuring Arild Andersen). His debut recording A Big
Sky
was critically aclaimed a brilliant new talent Jazz on CD.
Alumnus of Berklee College of Music and student of Jaco Pastorius
and Dave Holland, bassist, Terje Gewelt has recorded some forty CDs
with Scandinavian, European and American artists including Billy
Cobham, Tommy Smith, Misha Alperin, Michael Schrieve and for
Labels such as RCA, CBS, Blue Note and ECM. He has toured
extensively with Billy Cobham, Tommy Smith and Misha Alperin.
Jarle Vespestad is one of the most in demand drummers in
Norway
and has amassed an impressive discography since leaving the Jazz
College og the Trøndelag Musikkonservatorium in Trondheim in 1992.
His drumming expertise covers mainly styles including Central/Eastern
European folk forms with the group Farmers Market, through
to Avant
Garde soundscape experimentalism with Supersilent and forays
into
Retro-Bop and Groove projects.
