In 1992, bassist Terje Gewelt was asked to play a trio concert with Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi at the Engebret Café in Oslo. Gewelt had not heard of Pieranunzi before, but it soon became obvious that this was no average jazz pianist. Ever since that magical evening, Gewelt has dreamed of working again with this Italian master. In August of 2008, this dream was realized, resulting in this CD, “Oslo”. The music was recorded over three days in Resonant Music’s own studio in Oslo. Along with Gewelt and Pieranunzi, it features the great Swedish drummer, Anders Kjellberg.
Terje Gewelt has released seven CD’s in his own name and plays bass on close to one hundred jazz recordings with renowned Norwegian and international musicians. He is also known through his work with Billy Cobham “Nordic”, Dag Arnesen “Norwegian Song”, Staffan W. Olsson, Tommy Smith and Misha Alperin.
Enrico Pieranunzi is today considered to be one of the leading jazz pianists in Europe and a master of the piano trio format. He has released a large number of critically acclaimed CD’s in his own name featuring, among others, Chet Baker, Marc Johnson, Charlie Haden and Kenny Wheeler.
Anders Kjellberg has for many years been one of the most in demand and respected drummers in Sweden and Scandinavia. He’s known for his dynamic and creative drumming style in groups such as the Lars Jansson Trio and Rena Rama with pianist Bobo Stenson.
“Oslo” features original compositions of Gewelt and Pieranunzi, along with an exciting and beautiful freely improvised suite in three parts. The music is melodic, playful and accessible, with skillful interaction and masterful improvisation and “feel” that will be sure to satisfy the most discriminating listener. This is contemporary jazz at its finest!
